A Tale of Two Catchers

Well it rained here in New York last night (no surprise there, I think NY is going to be renamed “Seattle” any day now). Good thing the Yankees are far far and away in Minnesota, or their 10 run display could have been compromised, perhaps rained out. That and the fact that I love the “vampire seats” at the dome make for good reasons that the game was in the Hubert H Humphrey metrodome yesterday evening. The Yankees box score looked more like a completed sudoku puzzle than anything else, the Yankees pieced together 10 runs on 16 hits while managing 7 walks. Every Yankee starter got a hit, and Teixeira, Gardner and Cervelli had impressive nights, going 4-6, 3-5 and 2-4 respectively. The damage was almost much greater, but Twins center fielder Carlos Gomez robbed a grand slam from A-Rod. CC pitched a gem, 7 innings of 3-hit ball, the only blemish a Michael Cuddyer solo shot. Perhaps the highlight of his night was blanking both Mauer and Morneau, going a combined 0-6.

Which is which?

Rumor has it that Jose Molina completed his last rehab assignment today and may be joining the team in Minnesota tonight. I think that FC (Cervelli) is a man we should try at all costs to keep in the big leagues. The way I see it, we have 3 options (since Girardi has made it clear they will not be carrying three catchers)

  1.

  2. Ball Boy
  3. One of the grounds crew guys that does the YMCA dances

I suppose SWB (the Yankees’ triple A facility) is probably the best thing for him, but don’t be surprised when he hurries back, thats what happens when you hit .300 with RISP. Between his himpressive hitting and dealing with CC and the new pitchers so well, he is a valuable asset that I think will be back before the season ends (and please bring Ian Kennedy with you!)

As much as FC will be missed, I am truly excited for the long awaited return of Jose Molina. It is well known that he plays an excellent defense as catcher, and I believe, this may be wrong because I couldn’t find rankings for 2008, but I believe he led the AL in percentage of throwing out runners last season. (Please comment and correct me if I’m wrong on that one). If not the highest percentage, he was definitely up there. He provides the occasional offensive boost as well, I had the pleasure to be at the last old Yankee Stadium game and see him hit the last homerun. Regardless of whos catching, tonights game will be Burnett (7-4, 3.83) vs Perkins (4-4, 4.38)

Also, today will be the first day YES watchers will be able to access live games on their computer. For more information Click Here
