Memo to Yankees: Forget the Apples

Whenever Jeter argues with an umpire, you know somethings up. It is well known in baseball that you never make the 1st or 3rd out at 3rd base, which is why when Derek Jeter decided to steal with no outs in the bottom of the 1st inning, he knew he would make it. After all, he seemed to get a good read of sensation Ricky Romero, since he had just stolen second off of him. Despite Jeters confidence, he was called out at third. In the new age of the replays and slow motion, the fans could clearly see that Jeters argument was just and that he was clearly safe. Marty Foster, the umpire at third, on the other hand seemed to disagree. The substance for his argument? That the ball beat Jeter to the bag. Neither Jeter nor Girardi bought this explanation, as Girardi argued resulting in his getting tossed. Unlike other occurances where Girardi was thrown out, the Yankees didn’t explode in an offensive surge. A tough luck game left them on the losing end, 7-6.

Among other excitement included the long awaited debut of Eric Hinske, whose day overall I
eric hinske.jpgwould deem a success. In the top of the first he made a “web-gem” worthy play in the outfield for the second out in the inning, along with crushing a ball for a homer. The damage had already been done though, with the Hinske homerun giving the yankees a 4-1 defecit to make up. But just when they seemed to have a rally in their bones, scoring 5 more runs to make the score 7-6 in the ninth, guess who comes to the plate with two outs and men on? Thats right, Eric Hinske. While he lacked in the last minute heroics and struk out to end the game, you can’t do it all. I think the home run and highlight worthy play in the outfiled won over Yankee fans’ loyalty (at least for now).

In other baseball news, Nomah made his first appearance back at Fenway since being traded from the sox in 2004. It was like a family reunion of sorts, if your family reunions consist of thousands of people dressed in red shirts with voices laced with Boston accents. He was greated with thunderous applause and acknowledged the fans several times by tipping his helmet while in the on deck circle. “It was unbelieveable, I really really can’t put it into words. The emotion I felt, I was really getting choked up. These fans here have had so many moments where they just make me feel like I’m walking on clouds, and today was another one of those nights. I can’t thank them enough.”

Last but not least:

According to Toronto Blue Jays GM J.P Ricciardi, pitcher Roy Halladay might be on the trading block. While I’m not going to go into another rant about how Roy Halladay has achieved ”god” status in my eyes, feel free to reference my oldest blog post call me crazy. Getting Roy Halladay would be the best move since the Oceans movies cast Brad Pitt and George Clooney in the same movie. While keeping the old adage in mind “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, I think the Yankees should hide the apples for a while and let the Doc come to NY

Why getting Roy Halladay would be a great idea:

  1. With Chen Ming Wang on the DL you could bring in a pitcher instead of taking one out of the bullpen and disrupting its delicate balance (in the case that Chen Ming Wang is out for an extended amount of time)
  2.  Thinking long term, when Chen Ming Wang gets better, the Yankees could have Roy Halladay take the 5th spot in the rotation and have the option of sending Joba back to the bullpen if they don’t think its too late (I am on the “keep joba in the pen” side of the debate)
  3. GO/AO (ground out to fly out) ratio is 2nd highest in the AL 2.24, not giving up lots of fly balls is a huge plus when pitching in Yankee Stadium because balls that would normally be fly balls in other stadiums are home runs here
  4. Strikeout kind of pitcher that doesn’t allow many home runs
  5. He’s Roy Halladay

I’m already contemplating how I’m gonna look in my Roy Halladay Yankee jersey.

(Side Note: I know he’s not number one, but they wouldn’t let me put 32 on it)

Signing off for now
